Most people hold a fixed perception that metal-material aluminum foil bags must be recyclable, but the actual industry standards and recycling status are not so. But this characteristic only applies to pure aluminum single-layer material. Mainstream products that consumers daily come into contact with on the market, such as food aluminum foil bags, vacuum bags, tea stand-up bags, and industrial moisture-proof aluminum foil bags, are not pure aluminum material, but multilayer composite structures, which is also the core root cause of their difficulty in conventional recycling.

 

II. Material Differentiation: Three Types of Aluminum-Series Packaging, With Different Recycling Attributes

First is pure aluminum single-layer packaging, with no plastic composite layer or adhesive glue layer, single structure, and can normally participate in municipal recycling when clean and pollution-free. But this type of material has poor toughness, cannot be heat-sealed, and is almost not used for finished product packaging, only for simple aluminum foil auxiliary materials.

Next is the composite aluminum foil bag accounting for over 95% of the market, adopting PET/AL/PE three-layer composite process, bonded into one under high temperature and high pressure. Finally, the easily-confused metallized film bag, which only plates an extremely thin aluminum nano-layer on the plastic film surface, with no solid aluminum foil, extremely low aluminum content, no metal recycling value, and is treated as ordinary plastic waste throughout.

 

III. Recycling Pain Points: Reasons Why Composite Aluminum Foil Bags Are Difficult to Recycle Conventionally

Composite aluminum foil bags are not technically unrecyclable, but the civilian conventional recycling system cannot handle them. On one hand, municipal waste sorting equipment only adapts to single materials, cannot separate the bonded aluminum foil and plastic, and mixed materials will contaminate the entire batch of recycled raw materials, automatically screened as non-recyclable waste.

Industry standard compliant statement: Aluminum substrate has infinite recyclable characteristics; this product is a multilayer composite functional packaging requiring professional industrial equipment to complete material separation, not applicable to conventional municipal recycling systems. And its core environmental value is to extend product shelf life through super barrier properties, greatly reducing food and industrial product expiration waste, and lowering full-life-cycle resource loss.

 

Simply put, the environmental attributes of aluminum foil bags cannot be generalized. Pure aluminum material can be normally recycled; mainstream composite aluminum foil bags on the market are not civilian-recyclable but industrially specially regenerable. As functional packaging, its greatest environmental advantage is reducing product loss rather than daily waste sorting recycling, which is also the industry-recognized core evaluation standard.
