Covering five dimensions: appearance, seal integrity, barrier performance, temperature resistance, and certification, these methods help you quickly assess the quality of aluminum foil bags. 1. Visual Inspection
No instruments needed. You can spot a substandard bag at a glance.
Check the foil surface:A high-quality pure aluminum bag has a uniform matte silver finish with no large white spots, pinholes, or black specks. Pinhole defects allow air and moisture to pass through, causing dry goods to oxidize and spoil within weeks.
Check the seal edges:Sealed edges should be flat, free of wrinkles, and without excess material. Inferior bags often have uneven seal widths that delaminate with a light tug, making them highly prone to splitting and leaking under the pressure of stacked ocean freight.
Check the print quality:Compliant benzene-free ink produces sharp, clear graphics. A damp paper towel rubbed across the logo should not pick up any ink. Bleeding ink poses a safety risk when it migrates into oil-rich foods.
Check the window area:The transparent film must be tightly bonded to the aluminum foil with no bubbles or lifted edges.
2. Seal and Strength Testing
Seal failure is the most common after-sales issue in export orders. Two simple tests can identify problems early.
Air inflation test:Fill the bag with air, seal it completely, and squeeze firmly. A qualified bag will not leak air or burst at the seal. For Aluminum foil self-sealing bags with zippers, repeat the open-close cycle 20 times before inflating. The bag must still hold air pressure to pass.
Puncture and abrasion test:Pull both ends of the bag with both hands. The composite layers should not separate. Gently rub the surface with a hard object. The aluminum layer should not peel off or puncture. It is critical to distinguish pure aluminum foil from low-cost metallized film bags. Metallized bags lose their silver coating at the slightest scratch, and their barrier properties are rendered useless.
3. Light-Blocking and Barrier Test
The core value of an aluminum foil bag is its ability to block light and oxygen.
Press a flashlight firmly against the bag body. A high-quality pure aluminum bag will show zero light penetration. If light passes through, the aluminum layer is too thin, and UV rays will accelerate product spoilage. For retail packaging like Stand-up aluminum foil pouch, light-blocking capability is a non-negotiable requirement.
4. Temperature Resistance Testing
Select the appropriate test based on your product's distribution and storage conditions.
Freezer bags:Place the bag in a -20°C environment for 24 hours. Upon removal, bend the bag. It should not crack or become brittle.
Retort bags:Boil the bag in 121°C water for 30 minutes. The bag body must not delaminate, blister, or leak.
Ambient storage bags:Subject the bag to alternating hot and cold temperatures. The seal edges must not delaminate.
5. Certification and Compliance Verification
Passing visual and physical tests only proves durability. Compliance documentation is the real threshold for export orders.
Material specification:Confirm the bag is made from food-grade PET/AL/PE pure aluminum composite film, not industrial recycled materials.
System certificates:Request Chinese and English copies of ISO22000, HACCP, and Food Production License certificates. Sansheng can provide all of these in full.
Test reports:Obtain records covering solvent residue, heavy metal migration, and seal integrity self-inspection. Suppliers who cannot provide any test data are highly likely using substandard raw materials, which puts your shipment at risk of customs detention.
A qualified aluminum foil bag must meet five criteria: a smooth surface free of pinholes, airtight performance under pressure, complete light opacity, resistance to tearing and temperature extremes, and complete compliance documentation.
